Communicating Through the Radio

It is strange to think how the media is everywhere. To use myself as an example, depending on the day, I watch a few hours of television. On Sundays if I am home I read the Fargo Forum and my local town’s newspaper. I have the radio on, music playing on my computer, or my i-pod plugged into my ears constantly throughout the day. It is easy to see why we are so affected by it. Even if I am not fully paying attention, the television is on in the background of a conversation I am having or my computer is playing some music while I do my homework. At the moment, I am listening to Crazy by one of my favorite bands, Aerosmith. I love listening to all sorts of music, and that is why I chose music/radio to be my medium for the blogs for this class.

I say music/radio because in a sense I find music to be its own medium. The radio brings us not only music, but talk radio, news, sports, etc. I cannot stand to listen to talk radio. I do not enjoy listening to people who use their position on the radio to get up on their soapbox and complain all day. However how boring and annoying it is, this is a way of mass communication using the radio.

My favorite part about the radio is music. Radio communicates with us using the news and talk radio, but I feel that songs communicate to us as well. Artists speak out and communicate with their audiences by the lyrics in their songs. It is amazing how one song can have multiple meanings to different people. Some songs can remind you of a certain time, place, or person in your life. Some songs make you laugh and others make you cry. Music is a powerful medium. So, because I feel these are two sorts of different mediums that coincide together, I will be writing a bit about both from week to week.

  1. I agree with you about talk radio! I hate that random people have their own talk shows, such as Bridget from the Girl's Next Door. If I want to listen to a conversation i'd rather just go out and talk to friends or listen to the news.
I also agree with you about music. It is one of the most expressive tools we use as human beings. Some people have trouble expressing themselves, whether it be through words or emotions, and songs really help them with both of those.
Without music our world would be extremely boring! It would almost be like being deaf. I was watching TV earlier and I realized that music was being played throughout almost eh entire show. It was crazy!
Even silent movies had piano players in the theaters playing along with the movies to add that extra little something to spark your mind.

  2. Radio is major way of communication like you said. Every time I'm in my car, my radio is on. I think it is a great way to hear new tunes or our favorite sones. In a way, radio is an advertisement for music. Many people who hear a song they really like on the radio go and buy the song. The news is also a major part of radio. It is a quick way to get news out to those at home or in their car in cases of emergency, such as bad weather.

  3. I would say that I love music just as much as you. It is something that can be a stress reliever or a great thing to motivate me when I'm working out. The radio is something that I would agree is good to have. With the radio a person can listen to all the different music they like. I have to disagree with you that not all talk radio is bad. I know that there are dumb talk shows, but there is also good ones like the Bob and Tom show. I fine that to funny and interesting. So I guess people in general will end up choosing what they like best on the radio or in music. I know what I like and you know what you like. That is all that should matter.
